Italo Ferreira Pulls Out Of US Open With Hamstring Injury

Tears flow across the globe!

Yesterday at U.S. Open, the beach was set ablaze by Seth Moniz’s backside cartwheel.

It was an impressive athletic display – that I cannot refute – but the fact that the world was so incredibly enamored by a three foot air on a two foot wave is an apt representation of the overall quality of this event.

Despite its ghastly conditions, Huntington Beach continues to lure the world’s best and second-best surfers to its oversized pier, both for the points and publicity on offer.

This year the World Number 4 surfer and Brazil’s most prominent Mario cosplayer, Italo Ferreira, decided to grace the Open with his mustachioed presence.

It was all going great for Ferreira, taking names cashing checks etc., until he was upended by a miniature backside floater in Round 5.

Squeamish viewers should now close their eyes and scroll vigorously.

Despite the injury, Italo still managed to win his Round 5 heat against Michael Rodrigues, which then gave Italo a full day to recuperate for his Quarterfinal match.

Then today, just before the Jadson Andre x Italo Ferreira quarter was set to begin, the handsome but dwarfish Travis Logie delivered devastating news.

“Unfortunately due to his hamstring injury, Italo has decided to take the cautionary route and not surf today,” Logie stated on the webcast. “Jadson Andre will get a walk-through.”

When asked about the current prognosis of Italo’s hammy, Logie supplied some half-believable optimism:

“At this point it’s too early to tell, but we’re hopeful that Italo will be able to surf the CT event at Teahupo’o next week.”

And isn’t this just the damndest news? A legitimate World Title contender – and an exciting one at that – taken out by a tiny chop in Huntington Beach mere days before the touted Teahupo’o event.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Italo should have sacked up and went to Tahiti early with Filipe.

Nevertheless, we wish him the best in his recovery and genuinely hope he’ll be tube-ready by Friday. That little plumber sure can clog a pipe.
