There’s already a lot of incentives floating around for world tour surfers. But, here’s a new one: Varial Surf Technology, blowers of the space-age foam, have put $75,000 on the table for any man or woman that makes a quarter, semi or final of a WSL event while riding a board shaped from a Varial blank (logo must be clearly visible). They’re calling it the “Varial Revolution Race.”

“The Revolution Race is our way of putting our money where our mouth is,” said Varial CEO Edison Conner. “Professional athletes have already started testing our technology and riding it in competition–the Revolution Race is an extra push we are offering to pros, shapers, and even amateurs to really up the performance game at the highest level of surfing.”

Italo Ferreira’s the first to take the bait, riding a Varial board in his Round 1 win at Snapper. It’s long way to the quarters, but Italo sure did look spry.

Other CT’ers to currently testing the foam are said to be Davey Cathels, Malia Manuel, Tatiana Weston-Webb, and a large majority of the Brazilian storm—including Filipe Toledo, Alejo Muniz, Caio Ibelli and Alex Ribeiro.

If Doz is backing, they gotta be working.

Not just for the kids, the 9’6” Shane Dorian rode at the Eddie was Varial foam. Dorian has been an early adopter of the new tech, speaking highly of its liveliness.

Behind the scenes it’s Dorian’s Big Island brethren CJ “The Vanilla Gorilla” Kanuha making sure the right people are getting the goods. The guy could sell coconuts to Coconut Willie and has been a good ambassador for the growing company. He’s facilitated guys like Matt Meola and Seth Moniz getting the boards under their feet.

Varial’s prerogative is to use science to create a better blank. This is their Space X. They want to put a surfer on the podium.

President Parker Borneman says, “When Edison and I first started brainstorming the idea of using science and engineering to revolutionize surfing, we knew we wanted to come up with new core materials that were not only lighter and stronger but would blow the doors off performance.”

As Edison says, they’re putting their money where their mouths are. Lets see how long this takes.
