New Wave Discovery = Spinning Left Tubes For Brave Euro Explorers

The underrated poet and songwriter Greg Brown once sang, “Peace and quiet, is there any? We are the beautiful, too many…here in the going, going, gone.” While we don’t reckon the old fella from Iowa is much of a surfer, he sure sounds like one.  

Lineups filled with GoPro-toting Tik Tok influencers and adult learners are becoming frighteningly standard, and one might begin to feel as though the dream of uncontested waves in unmolested locales is slipping through the grasp of the lifelong surfer. Everywhere is either flagged, geotagged, or about to be. Everyone has realized the beauty of surfing, and in sharing it, we are degrading our own natural resource.

A easy headspace to get into, right?

Yet, as this video proves — and as most of us truly know — there are still wonders of bathymetry, tucked away for the curious adventurer to find and frolick upon. Admittedly, Kepa Acero and Natxo Gonzalez aren’t just any pair of adventurers — they’re two of Europe’s most skillful surf-explorers, modern-day Columbus and de Gama — but the point stands. Given a bit of time and a spark of inspiration, there are moments of complete waveriding peace to be found.

The playful left-hander and the ensuing session is what most people — or at least most goofy-footers — would describe if you asked them about their dream wave. Sand bottom left point, slightly overhead barrels, and one mate to share it with. 

The moment of childish delight shared between Natxo and Kepa after back-to-back barrels is a heartwarming reminder of perfect sessions shared with just a friend or two.
