Tears for fears on the Indian ocean in the Mentawai Islands today. …Lost shaper Matt Biolos copped a fin cut above his left ear that required 16 stitches, Jamie O’Brien celebrated his 28th birthday with a Bintang-aided SUP and Kolohe Andino made the biggest frontside air of his life. First things first. Matt Biolos took a late takeoff at Roxys after a guy on the inside decided to let a set go unridden. He swung late, did one of those hardly-even-stroke paddles and “pearled as I reached the bottom,” said Matt. His fin took a slice above his ear and blood spurted from the side of his skull. He was calm throughout and was gifted 16 quite near-hospital-grade, skipper-crafted stitches. Frustrated by another day of two-to-three foot waves, birthday boy Jamie O’Brien took on the lineup on a beginners SUP. Coupled with a Bintang, he rode a few waves, mostly non-exclusively. And, the big highlight of the day was the frontside no-hand air of Kolohe Andino. Riding a Mayhem-shaped 5’10” x 18 7/8″ SubScorcher, he launched massively. Despite four still cameras capturing the action (all shooting it perfectly, too) we were unable to convince em to run it on the site just yet. “That’s the highest air I’ve ever done f’sure,” said Kolohe afterward, explaining why this wave Roxys is so good for airs. “It has a good air section, a soft landing and is never too threatening.” If you haven’t been to the site the past few days, you won’t know anything about the backstory here. Red Bull’s surf team are on location in Indonesia for their annual surf trip. This year they’ve enlisted Mod Coll film maker Kai Neville to create a four-part web series.
