A brief window into the routines of Andrew Doheny
From Stab issue 60: A brief window into the routines of Andrew Doheny, 20, Newport Beach, California. By Elliot Struck Waking: Depending on what I did the night before, I wake up anywhere between eight and 10am. I go to the bathroom and then I always go straight to my car, because when I wake up I can’t really sit down, I have to get up and get my day started straight away. Then, I’ll go to the donut shop over the street from my house, it’s called Dough Boys Donuts. I usually just get a drink and some fruit. Then, I’ll go check the waves. I pull in at 50th street ‘cause that’s the one street where you can pull up on the curb and get outta the car to check it. Then I come home and, if it’s good I’ll go out, if it’s not I’ll wait til around 11am. Coffee: I drink coffee, but not every day. If I get it, I get it from Dough Boys. Usually I just get a veggie croissant. When I got coffee, I don’t real care what I get. Kona blend, mostly. It’s a coffee from the Big Island! And, if I’m gonna drink it, it’s gonna be hot. I always take it back to my house to drink. But, I don’t drink it everyday ‘cause it doesn’t make me feel that good, y’know? I sometimes get a headache n’ shit. Surfing: I live a few blocks from the beach, so I just walk down. Actually, I speed walk. I’m a speed-walker. I put my suit on at my house and I do it all the way up. I never walk around with my suit half down. I don’t stretch and I’m always stiff. I just put my leash on, go for a 30-minute surf at Newport, get some closeouts and come in. If my hair’s dry, I’m usually hesitant on my first wave. The water’s cold so I’m gonna pump down the line and try not to get my hair wet. Most of the time, I’m going straight and kicking out ‘cause the waves suck here. Listening: I have CDs in my car that I try to mix up as much as possible. I have lots of vinyl at home but I don’t take good care of it as much as I should. I always try to play a record to suit whatever mood I’m in. A lot of the time, I put on a record but I get too psyched to play music myself, so I turn it off and start playing guitar, then turn it back on and keep going back and forward. I mostly have to play acoustic in my house ‘cause otherwise it’s too loud, but sometimes I play electric. Packing: I try to bring the least amount of boards as possible. I put all my clothes in my boardbag. I eliminate a piece of baggage and I get to protect my boards with my clothes at the same time. Practical! I don’t fold them though, I just throw them in. I try not to bring too much. If I’m away for two weeks, I bring six t-shirts. I don’t bring more than one pair of pants. A pair of trunks. Keep it simple. I use one type of fins (Droid has signature Captain Fin Co rudders) and I have two sets of them. I have one leash right now and it’s the same one I’ve had for that last two months. Everyone stole my leashes, so I bought one at the store right before my heat at the US Open and I’ve had the same one since. I used it the whole time I was in Indo and then in Virginia. I rarely remember to take wax with me when I travel, too. Flying: I fall asleep as soon as I get on the plane, right when I get in the chair, for about an hour. When I wake up, if I can’t sleep, I’ll drink a whiskey and Diet Coke or a glass of red wine. If I still can’t sleep, I’ll turn on the screen in front of me, if there is one. I’ll just watch Friends. I like watching Friends! If I sleep, I try to curl up, no headphones, no mask, no blanket. I get really bad anxiety when I’m next to strangers, so I try to not touch the stranger and try not to interfere with them. Travelling: There’s a routine to every trip, but on every trip that routine is different. For example, we just did a trip to Indo and stayed at a land camp. We stayed in bungalows and there was this little restaurant. Every morning we’d wake up and go to that restaurant to hang out. We’d watch the waves then go for a three-hour surf. And when we weren’t surfing, we were sitting there all day long. There’s not much else to do there. Partying: There’s no routine for that, it’s always mixed-up when that happens. I haven’t been to an actual party in a really long time. Most the time we got to a bar. A coupla friends meet up at my house, listen to music and hang out, drink some beer, then roll out. We go across the street to this bar called The Alley, right next to Dough Boys.
