Growing gracefully is an admirable journey.

Jay Davies was already the everyman surfer’s favourite. The humble West Oz pro who quietly made his way through the glory years of professional surfing on the back of freakish power and tube-riding mastery. Then, when the temple crumbled, he packed up his pro surfing box and transitioned to driving tugboats without bitterness.

Taking things on the chin and being grateful it happened rather than sour it’s over is the definition of integrity. Then, putting out potentially edit of the year (“Spirit”, up top, which was filmed whilst working full-time, no less) is the cherry ultimate validation of Jay’s enduring skills. We caught up with Yallingup’s finest to do a lap of his favourite things.

Favourite song right now?
I’m not sure exactly how I found this song, just stumbled across it when I started listening to a bit of country music.

Favourite funny YouTube clip?
I have no idea, I never watch viral YouTube clips.

First photo of yourself surfing?
Me at 11-years-old trying to hit the lip on a 5’6 Gaza surfboard from Garry Nicol, Yadin’s old boy.

Favourite shot of yourself surfing?
A photo by Kim Feast at my favourite beach in the world.

Draw a self portrait

Favourite surf clip you can find on Youtube?
I watch this religiously to this day.

You wake up and your house is fire what’s the first thing you grab?
I would tuck these two under wings and leg it.

Favourite style of Otis Sunnies?
Omar.

How many boards have you got in your quiver?
Not many, maybe 10 all up.

Most treasured surf craft?
The Volume II from Chilli surfboards. The last one I got lasted one surf, the good ones usually only have a short life. Probably because I get too excited and push back too hard, fuck!

What would your last meal if you were on death row?
Would look something like this.

The car would you buy if you had infinite cash at your disposal?
Toyota Landcruiser 200 series, caravan and a tinny for driving around our beautiful country.
