90s Styled Threads That Are Everything But Kitschy

Because you’d hate to look like you covered yourself in glue and run through a charity shop.

The 90s were the worst. Radio DJs talked over tracks you wanted to tape and if you so much as breathed on your CD player it would skip. Not to forget, the rise and fall of McDonald’s Pizza, the Yugoslav Wars (ok, maybe we’re getting a little too deep here) and soul patches. The world could’ve done without Crystal Pepsi, too.

Yet ask anyone about the pre-Y2K years and they’ll ramble on about halcyon days with glossed over eyes. Who’s to blame for this era favouritism? Or rather, what? The fashion! Survivorship bias is a hell of a drug. Think, all threads from the 90s were tailored with stylistic gold. High quality, softly coloured and thick-necked. Clothes from 1990-1999 stood the test of the aughts and are now experiencing as much of a surge as ever. For example: The “Down Times” line from Melbourne-based brand, The Snake Hole.

See the photos? The stills? Delicate vibes and softer tones? When The Snake Hole, an artist-run gallery, studio space and apparel manufacturer based out of the Mornington Peninsula, sent their newest line of clothes our way, we were smitten. They’re threads you’d expect a bunch of creatives slinging ideas around a garage over a couple beers to make. Colourful, splashy, but not contrived. Fitted with eye-grabbing shades and a fine attention to detail that fits (and looks) like every old favourite tee of yours from the early naughties.

Sure, most Stab readers care nothing for faddy threads. And will be especially sickened by the AUD$60 tees and AUD$180 jackets that feature pastel colours and embroidered logos. But the other 8799 people who read this piece and fail to comment should look the store up here, or check it out in person if they ever find themselves hanging around the Mornington Peninsula.

Because when you see their collection of hats, shirts, pins, etc., you’re gonna wish you hadn’t spent all your pocket money on late-night kebabs, strong lattes, or that extra round on Saturday. It’s good stuff.
