Welcome to PhotoLyfe, in which Stab’s favourite photographers answer questions about themselves with their own images. It’s that old picture-tells-a-thousand-words chestnut but with more colour and pop. It’s a way to cut out all the bullshit. It’s like jacking into the main vein of those who supply us with exquisite surf imagery every day. Chris Gurney first picked up a camera in Perth at age 15, but it wasn’t til 18 that he really started getting serious. “I didn’t start for any particular reason, I just liked watching waves and picking up a camera felt natural,” he says. “I like swimming the most out of any way of shooting, being in the action and working to get the shot.” Now, at 23, he’s one of Australia’s best and really shines when pointing into a big slab.
