Beachbreak Barrels And Big Salmon In The Far North
Allow the O’Neill team to bring you on their Alaskan adventure.
Take a few coldwater connoisseurs, send them to one of surfing’s most scenic frontiers (with a lot of neoprene), and you’re bound to have something to write home about.
Recently, O’Neill decided to follow this recipe and — with the help of Josh Mulcoy — dispatched Brett Barley, Noah Wegrich, and Timmy Reyes on a journey to the land of bald eagles, Aleutian juice, and snow-capped mountains.
As you’d expect, it wasn’t all sunshine and offshores. However, we’re guessing that’s exactly why they went on this trip. Though it’s been emphasized many times before, the reward of these harsh destinations seems to lie in the chase, in the potential for unrealized adventures, and in the satisfaction of every half-decent session.
After a few dismal surfs — one featuring some hectic driftwood and a lot of hefty closeouts — the boys stumbled upon a beach awash with spitting a-frames and visions galore.
One glory day, with a handful of waves shared under shining glaciers, can make a whole trip feel worth it.
Brett’s salmon catch probably wasn’t a bummer either.
