Julian Wilson’s Triple Crown Soundtrack
Back in December, Julian Wilson won his first Pipe Masters and his first Vans Triple Crown. There’s no dancing around the fact that until that point, Jules’ year on tour had not been ideal. The problem with everyone knowing how goddamn amazingly you surf is having everyone expect big things from you when you pull on the jersey. And while Jules is clearly one of the five best surfers in the world right now, 2014 was not a year that saw him stacking competitive points – until Hawaii, that is. You probably saw Jules burning around competitor’s areas with his ever-present pre-game Sol Republic cans on. We sure did. And, we wanted to know just what was bouncing around in there. Turns out, it was just one album. “All through the Triple Crown I was just listening to the A$AP Rocky album on repeat through my iPod,” says Jules. “All of them, every song – I just let it play. There’s no particular song on that album, they’re all great for getting me pumped for a heat.” Who’d have guessed the vibes lay down by a dude from Harlem called (real name) Rakim would help put a kid from the Sunshine Coast on top of the world for a day?
