Sheldon Simkus is an unusual name that’s been bouncing around the wings for some time, and now the Cooly kid’s ready to take centre stage.

Specialising in behind the rock Snapper’s not as big a health hazard as being a Backdoor disciple, but it’s none the less critical. Sheldon’s cut his teeth in the river-like rip and knee-buckling backwash of the country’s most famous (and coveted) wave, and his surfing reflects as such. He looks totally at ease falling from the sky on takeoff, can lay rail in the pocket like only those raised on QLD’s famed points, and has a nimble-footed air game to boot. D-Bah is, after all, just around the corner. If you’re in need of further convincing of the young man’s credentials, he also dates women’s surfing future-star Macy Callaghan, and ended a clip full of blowpipes, wrenching turns, and lofty punts on a floater. What’s not to like?
