What’s Scarier: Pipeline Or Jaws?
Moana Jones and Annie Reickert make their case.
In case you didn’t already know, Red Bull puts out quite a few surf-related YouTube series. Sessions, 21Days, All-In, Following, People Watching, and Stab’s collab with a catchy tune, No Contest.
The company that keeps Italo and J.O.B. functioning from dawn ‘till dusk recently published the first episode of the second season of its ‘No Small Feat’ series, starring Hawaiian standouts Moana Jones and Annie Reickert. If you weren’t familiar, the series gives an in-depth look at women raising the bar at waves of consequence in Hawaii. This time, it’s Pipeline (Moana) and Jaws (Annie).
This raises the question: which style of surfing (medium-sized, extra concave waves over a shallow reef; or XXL, occasionally hollow waves in super deep water) is more terrifying?
Both Moana and Annie ride waves that the average surfer would want nothing to do with, but which truly haunts your dreams?
As the ‘No Small Feat’s’ name suggests, season two captures significant milestones for both Moana and Annie from their 2020-2021 winter season. Annie gets busy towing into unruly Jaws during the swell of the season. Meanwhile, Moana opts for a full-blown North Shore marathon, surfing the big three of Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Haleiwa in less than eight hours to submit clips for the first-ever Digital Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. It’s basically a better version of Keeping Up with the Joneses.
Both women come across as humble, driven, and poised for major accomplishments in their respective endeavors. At just 19, Annie looks to become Maui’s next swiss army knife and is doing Kai Lenny-esque stunts in the water/air. Moana, 22, already hailed as one of the best female Pipe surfers ever, offers candid thoughts on her progression at Pipe and doesn’t shy away from that notable drop-in from last January.
