Oh, What Treacherous Delights Europe’s Been Hiding
When’s the last time Nic Von Rupp missed a European swell?
Episode 3 of Nic von Rupp’s “Life of Von Froth” series is an example of the bounty that befall those residing on western Europe’s swell-rich coastline.
Nic von Rupp begins his day with an all-star Portuguese session, trading groomed right-hand barrels with Frederico Morais and Miguel Blanco in Ericeira. He then gets the call from former junior coach/big wave surfer João Macedo on a swell hitting Spain’s “Costa da Morte”, otherwise known as the “Death Coast”.
With a name derived from its infamous relationship with shipwrecks, this coastline is also home to one of Europe’s mightiest tow slabs. With a right on low tide and a left on high, these waves are not to be fucked with. Linking up with spot pioneers Axi Muniain and Eric Rebier, the boys get a day’s worth of truly frightening surf. Nic gets clamped, João gets a sick one, and Axi nearly comes out of a mind boggler at 8:34.
What would be the mission of a lifetime for most is just another day in the life of Von Froth. Tune in above.
