This was over five years in the making.

We planned to hold a Stab High at URBNSURF in Melbourne in March of 2020. Surfers were confirmed. Rooms were booked. Tickets were sold. You probably know what happened next.

“We moved mountains to create this event — ironic that it was toppled by a microscopic germ,” we wrote at the time.

Two hundred and ninety weeks (and five Stab Highs) later, we’ve finally managed to bring the event to Stab’s continent of birth. While the official practice sessions started today, we started testing the acid drop platform with a small crew last night.

“Leap of faith” is only a cliche when used figuratively.

The evening culminated with a few surfers failing the pool staff’s breathalyzer tests for permission to enter the water. Hint: One of them has historically been at odds with security guards at Stab High.

Inevitable, we’d argue.

Six hours later, we were back at the pool for 15 hours of practice sessions. Which brings us to the first episode of Poolside from Sydney.

Hughie Vaughan was not the only individual to find themselves upside down here in the past 24 hours.

Toby Creegan and Stace Galbraith prowled the site today while all 56 surfers tested the new air section. Their feedback — which was occasionally delivered in spoken word, but more commonly communicated non-verbally — was that the thing fucking goes.

Come poolside with us and see how the (skinny) GOAT and 55 of his newest friends went today.

Broadcast starts at 7:30 AM local time tomorrow. Good luck to all of our soldiers tonight.

This event is supported by: Monster Energy, Sun Bum, Quiksilver, I-Sea, FCS, Tudor, Skullcandy, White Claw.

Cameron Richards: Japan Stab High runner-up and Village Surf Shop employee of the month.

Two people who know exactly how the 2004 Nova Schin Festival in Brazil went.

…and five people who, with all due respect, would not.

Hughie again, fishing this time.

Timo bought a new RED camera just for this event.

We’re all out here trying to save lives.

Ask Caity Simmers (or Sky Brown, here) who the acid drops are for.
