We Can’t Stop Watching The Air Shane Borland Did Over This Poor Girl’s Head

Now playing in Metal Neck’s ‘Snack Boy’.

Shane ‘Snack Boy’ Borland is what marketing peeps would call a cross-sport athlete. He’s simultaneously a pro surfer and pro skater, which means he’s good at airs (definitely) and gets twice as many girls (presumably).

Last year, Shane and the Metal Neck crew went to Indonesia for an extended stay. As one might expect in the world’s most wave-rich archipelago, they scored some quality if not entirely excellent surf.

While the film’s antagonist is Snack Boy, it also features Balaram Stack, Colin Moran, Wil Reid, Kai Hing, and Mauro Diaz. The film’s outro sequence is an ode to Newport’s fallen but not forgotten Ken ‘Kenergy’ Suzuki. From everything we’ve seen and heard, Ken sounded like an outstanding person and true wipeout aficionado. He is dearly missed.

Below, we asked Shane a few questions about the trip plus life in general.

Stab: When was this filmed, and how long were you in Indo?
Shane Borland: It was around this time last year. We were there for a month.

How much does skating influence your surfing?
I feel like it goes both ways, skating influences my surfing and surfing influences my skating. Definitely feel more confident and less scared to send it on big sections when I’m surfing just because water hurts a lot less than concrete [laughs].

If you had to give up one which would it be?
Fuck that’s pretty hard. I guess I’d give up skating just cause it hurts more and I feel like I’ll be able to surf a lot longer than I can skate.

Of all the other surfers in this piece, who impressed you the most on the trip and why?
They all rip so hard! But probably Bal, watching him at Deserts was insane. He’s so good at reading the tube!

What’s the funniest/most interesting thing that happened on the trip?
Probably Wil crashing his moped and losing his phone on the way back from a big party and then taking my moped to find his phone and crashing my moped. And he didn’t find his phone! [laughs].

Tell me about your nickname, Snack Boy.
Ford Archbold gave me the nickname on a trip in Salina Cruz ’cause I was constantly chomping on chips right behind him in the backseat of the car when we were driving to go surf.

Where’s the next place you’re going and why?
Hopefully Portugal or just Europe in general. They have the best skate spots and sick waves and just a sick vibe over there.
