Watch: Pipeline Opens For The Season, If Just Barely
It’s not pumping by any means, but not bad for September, either.
Like ancient clockwork, the North Pacific has come back to life after a long, hot hibernation.
The end of September marked Hawaii’s first northwest swell of the season, expressed in the form of fun-size surf at Pipeline, Rocky Point, and across the entirety of Oahu’s North Shore.
In this 13-minute doco, we follow Sunset Beach local and son of Oahu’s supreme landlord, Koa Rothman, as he revels in the uncrowded if somewhat lumpy conditions. Along for the ride is Ivan Florence, brother to the 2x World Champ and 1x Red Bull Cape Fear winner, John and Nate Florence, who are currently floating somewhere in the middle of the Pacific.
Pumping Pipeline it is not, but enough to entice us for this Hawaiian winter? Yes, yes it is.
PS, while Koa struggled to find a make, check how the “best ever female surfer at Pipe” (according to JOB) fared last week.
