Editor’s note: A previous version of this article had the Gravity film playing for 48 hours, hence all the gushy comments down below. Now, it’s available for purchase wherever you get your digital library, with all proceeds going to Junior Lifeguard programs around Oahu.
It’s clear that John John Florence loves where he grew up.
Evidence can be found in his films View From A Blue Moon, Maps Of Home, and FORM, to name a few.
The trend continues — deepens, even — with John’s new film, Gravity.
Shot over the 2021/2022 winter season, Gravity marks a shift in John’s distribution strategy. Instead of living on YouTube for free, this film is on sale on iTunes and Amazon, with all proceeds going to support Junior Lifeguard programs around Oahu.
Gravity opens with a conversation about what is perhaps the only side of the North Shore that most of the surf world has never seen: Summer. It’s flat and serene, until the forces of nature churn and change things. This is the film’s central theme, though it’s swathed with action.
On that note, it’d be pointless to call out any highlights. It’s a 20-minute John John edit from a memorable North Shore winter — you know you’re gonna sit down and watch it in its entirety. And as for the action?
It’s clear why John John Florence loves where he grew up.
When the waves are small (by Hawaii standards), he proves he’s easily one of the world’s best in the air. When the waves are burly, he collects and accelerates through turns on critical sections with absolute control. When the waves are massive and/or square, he approaches ’em as if the idea of the danger they pose has never registered in his brain.
John’s 30, and he’s been touted since his pre-teens. At this point, what more could be said about his surfing other than nobody else is capable of doing it?
Gravity is a family affair as it also features John’s brothers Nathan and Ivan, as well as his mother, Alexandra, and cameos from Barron Mamiya and Jamie O’Brien.
Craving more from John? ‘Course you are. Here’s a long interview he did with us recently about filmmaking, and life.
