Watch: Nic Von Rupp Train-Hops His Way Into European Tubes
All aboard.
Let us first make the distinction between train surfing and taking the train to go surfing.
One is stupid, dangerous and highly illegal, while the latter is quite relaxing and relatively safe – unless you’re Nic von Rupp, and that train is on a collision course with some of Europe’s heaviest and most menacing waves.
Von Rupp, a Portuguese native and staple in the big wave surfing community, chose to travel by train for a two-year surf expedition around the Northeast Atlantic, citing its adventurous and stress-free nature, even in anticipation of huge surf. Making stops at big wave destinations across Europe, von Rupp scored picturesque scenery, friendly conversations, and some big-ass barrels.
The 22-minute film, directed by Gustavo Imigrante, is quality work, and well worth the time. There might be a Mick Fanning sighting in there, too.
