Watch ‘Narco’: A Trip Through Mexico’s Rich, Abundant Underbelly

To the best of our knowledge, no drugs were smuggled during the making of this film.

San Diego has long been a breeding ground for some of surfing’s most unique characters. It doesn’t appear this generation has any intention of letting that tradition slip.

Whether in front or behind the lens, from wavepool gurus to longboard maestros, the place is ripe with bright young talent that is ready to represent SD County for the foreseeable future.

As part of this new wave, three of the area’s young stars filmed, edited, and released their own surf film, ‘Narcos’, premiering it last week at Santa Rita Plaza. Jake Halstead, Skip McCullough, and Kale Cadam took a short flight over the border to enjoy Mexico’s fabled right points.

Jake and Skip’s paths towards surf stardom have been circuitous, to say the least. Skip bangs nails to give himself a shot at proving his mettle, which he did both by winning the QS at Could 9 (heart-wrenching victory speech and all) as well as blowing minds in his latest edit. Jake, on the other hand, has a well-documented and highly admirable weight-loss story. Since dropping his first proper edit in years a few months back, Jake has signed with Volcom and seemingly doubled down on his passion for grab rail cutbacks. While we don’t know much about Kale, it appears he is headed for success himself, bringing a progressive approach that juxtaposes nicely against Jake’s rail work.

Hit the link above to watch Narco’s and if you’re too impatient to sit for 20 minutes, the “good” waves start at around 13:30.
