Watch: Death Is A Canadian River
Dylan Graves battles with the Skookumchuck Narrows.
Behind the manicured flower beds of modern surfing, there are still those who have never once watered their lawns or choked on a stiff collar.
Indo, Hawaii, Tahiti? Not on their radar. The quirky wave down the road that only breaks an hour a day? Yeah, they’ll be there. And who better to dig up surfing’s lingering weirdness than Puerto Rican Iggy Pop?
Dylan Graves has carved out a niche in surfing much like Anthony Bourdain did in the culinary world — by travelling the globe, chatting with the characters he meets, and connecting with his fellow man.
In his latest offering, the Weird Waves star takes on the Skookumchuck Narrows — a tidal river wave that boasts exactly one local surfer. Beyond this peculiar character, the wave — which is choked with whirlpools, sharp rocks, and 200 gallons of water thundering in and out with every tide — is ridden exclusively by kayakers.
“Surfing and kayaking have come together in a special way here,” says Dylan, visibly gasping after nearly being vacuum-sucked into a black funnel of death. “It comes down to doing it for the pure joy and fun of playing in the water. That’s the constant I see between all of us.”
