Call Your Loosest Friends And Book A Surf Trip

Watch: A group of people who identify as ‘core pirates’ having more fun than you.

Despite its quality and diversity of waves worth pointing a lens at, Europe isn’t exactly known to produce globally relevant freesurfers.

The old world has not a Harry Bryant, nor a Noa Deane, nor a Mason Ho nor a Mikey Feb. Instead, if we’re being honest here, and we are, the continent seems to overindex in surfers who behave as though three-to-the-beach should be more like five.

There are some exceptions — we’d submit Billabong’s semi-recent signing of William Allioti as evidence. However, broadly speaking, you can’t help but notice something of a dearth.

Could things change?

Perhaps. Firsthand research performed up and down the coast suggests there’s a growing presence of skilled young surfers who don’t know what ‘CS’ stands for, and this Billabong-backed film from the Keks Machine crew confirms it.

The cinematic endeavor focuses on the phonetic similarity between the word ‘corporate’ and the term ‘core pirates,’ and the intro scene makes it clear which camp the cast falls into. After that, it jumps into a more punk, DIY rhythm — probably because it’s a DIY film from a bunch of kids who share the same hobbies and interests as a fearsome group of seafaring Somalians.

PNP is the brainchild of Jordan ‘Djoko’ Sevellec and features Tibo Manson, Diego Torre, Mathis Martinelly, Jordan Noodles, Sassá Catarino, and Pedro Lemos. It’s mostly filmed by Baptiste “Brat” Derrien and Théo “Titigee” Preuilh Gereaume, who also handled the edit. “We throw parties, drop edits and collections nobody asked for — basically, do things our way,” says Djoko.

Action-wise, it’s unlikely to contend for Stab’s ‘Film Of The Year.’ Though there are moments of brilliance sprinkled throughout, it’s not the surfing that makes this film aspirational — it’s the lifestyle of traveling with friends and pigging out on whatever the ocean and/or nearby pub throws at you while giving a fuck about little else in the whole wide world.

Doesn’t that sound nice right about now?
