Watch: Andy, Kelly, Parko, And Snake Star In A Remarkable Haleiwa Heat
Nines are raining in this vintage Snaketales ep!
In 2002, World Tour powerhouses Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson, and Jake ‘Snake’ Paterson faced off in the semis at pumping Haleiwa and the results were superb.
Riding longer boards, the surfers were able to attack the bowl without fear of sliding out, leading to massive turns, floaters, tubes and even a few airs. Parko’s cross-sectional punt at 1:54 is simply divine.
Every surfer scored a nine (or in Kelly’s case, a 10) but at the end of the day it was Andy and Snake who advanced onto the finals. Even 16 years later, this heat remains a high-point for Haleiwa performance. We’d be lucky to see this level of surfing in a Haleiwa heat today.
