Woman Attacked By A Shark In Newport Beach, Yesterday
Beach closed from Balboa Pier to Crystal Cove.
Yesterday afternoon, in Corona del Mar, a woman was allegedly attacked by a shark. She was 150 yards offshore when she suffered wounds to her shoulders and upper torso. Reportedly she was bleeding heavily. At this time it is assumed the attack was caused by a shark, however not confirmed. An aggressive, rogue seal could be the culprit, and is not being ruled out. She was conscious and bleeding when she was pulled from the water and transported to the hospital.
“We do suspect the victim was bitten by a shark, but haven’t been able to confirm that because we had no other witnesses,” Rob Williams, Chief Lifeguard of the Newport Beach Fire Department’s Marine Operations Division told ABC news. “There was no reported shark sighting before the incident or after.”
“We are treating this as a shark-bite incident and are asking everyone to please stay out of the water in the closure area,” he continued. “We’ve resumed our search of the water by boat this morning and a police helicopter will be also helping us.”
For safety concerns a three mile stretch of beach is now shut down from the Balboa Pier south Crystal Cove. A holiday weekend’s been halted by a shark (or seal) that decided to be a dick…
