The Tell-All Story You Didn’t See Coming
Red Bull just dropped a full-length film about Leon Glatzer, called ‘Against Gravity.’
Leon Glatzer is one of only two surfers who have competed in both the Olympics and Stab High.
Leon was born in Hawaii. He grew up in Costa Rica. He now lives in Germany. Interesting, all this. But, somehow, his story hasn’t been widely told.
That changed recently — and in a big way.
The night before Red Bull’s Pool Clash in Leon’s adopted hometown of Munich, he and a crew of about fifteen people from Red Bull TV and Process Films premiered ‘Against Gravity.’ It was a full house.
The film is now available online. And when we say ‘film,’ we mean it.
This thing ain’t your average surf flick. It’s 77 minutes long and took a few years to make. Though it does build up to some very good surfing (brilliantly captured, we might add), the film focuses on Leon’s life story — and it goes deep.
We don’t want to spoil much, but the kid has had a wild ride. He was plucked away from the ocean for years. His family life was chaotic at times. And it’s fair to say his upbringing was quite different than the hopeless semi-sponsosred kid getting filmed at your local.
The underwater shots paired with narrated ruminations might be a bit on the nose for your taste, and that’s perfectly fine, but don’t let it get in the way of one of the most unexpectedly unique tales we’ve seen recently.
