The Story Of THAT West Oz Air Session With John Florence, Albee Layer, And Matt Meola
How Matt Meola stuck his backside elevator-drop rotation, we’ll never know.
John Florence calls this one of his favorite air waves. Can you blame him?
The West Oz reef-which-shall-not-be-named offers a steep section into a prevailing sideshore wind and the occasional cozy landing. Occasional.
Eight years ago, when filming for his first signature film, Done, John took his friends Albee Layer and Matt Meola along to Western Australia, presumably so that they could push him in the surf. And push him they did.
In this single session, the boys not only landed a dozen-or-so film-worthy airs (including Matt Meola’s impossible backside bomb-drop that Taj Burrow once called the best air ever landed) but also set their careers on an exponentionally upward trajectory, as it got all three Hawaiians invited to the Kustom Airstrike trip, which John would eventually win.
And look at them now.
