The Rapid and Radical Ascension Of Ryan Callinan
The Novocastrian’s most divine moments from 2019.
In 2016, Ryan Callinan finished his rookie CT season ranked 34th in the world. For a lesser man, it would have been, “Well, it was fun while lasted,” but behind that good-natured Aussie smile is guy with a whole hell of a lot of heat.
R-Cal spent 2017 and 2018 retooling his game. His power, angles of attack, amplitude, and commitment all went next level. He proved this by running all the way to the final in the Quik Pro France, after receiving an event wildcard from the WSL.
By the time he returned to the tour in 2019, Ryan was a new surfer. Surging to 14th in the world by season’s end, when he wasn’t in a jersey he was still in the water.
Dropping a “greatest hits” collection of clips from the last year, it’s pretty obvious how he got to where he is today.
And if four minutes of Ryan isn’t enough, listen to his recent appearance on the WSL’s “The Lineup” podcast with Dave Prodan. It will endear you even more to the Novocastrian.
