The Best Houdini Since CJ Hobgood At Teahupo’o?
Margaret River presents: Griff in the Box.
Australia’s wild side lives out west.
Hammered by Southern Ocean swell and layered in half-true folklore, the western edge of Australia is paradise with a few caveats. Combine long-period swells with a jagged, cockeyed coastline and some genuinely deranged bathymetry, and you get a buffet of funky, misshapen waves. Strange, hypnotic stuff. Sometimes perfect. Sometimes not. Always shared with big fish.
It’s also a tour stop. And this year, for the final time, it served as the chopping block for those flirting with the mid-season cut.
Coming in, both Colapinto brothers — bonded by blood and burritos — needed a result to avoid the guillotine.
And then, to silence any doubters, Griff did something that defies both modern science and traditional wisdom. You remember it. Inside the Box, he was bucked by a bull, launched skyward like a rat hurled at a drywall. Gone by the grace of god. Written off. Then, somehow, standing.
Not a make. A resurrection.
