Surf Strikes: You Can’t Win Them All

“The Life of Von Froth” is slowly becoming a user guide to Europe (and Northern Africas)’s most sinister offerings. While the last episode found Nic towing treacherous slabs on Spain’s Death Coast, this week’s installment follows surfing’s Vasco de Gama on an eight-hour journey deep into the heart of, “The true El Dorado, the oasis.”

Morocco.

With an ominous North Atlantic swell in the water, Nic made the difficult choice to ditch his native Nazare, heeding the advice of his friend, Othmane Choufani, that the swell direction was due west—bad for Naz, ideal for the fickle outer-reef that Nic and company would chase down in Morocco.

Waking up on the day of the swell, the crew was overjoyed at the fact that Portugal was rainy, windy, and generally up to no good while the Morrocoan flags laid slack. The only drawback was that the swell didn’t materialize in the way they had imagined, leading to a few tasteful pocket-rides but nothing to write home about.

On a positive note, Nic can now cross this wave off his supremely curated list and pursue something more cylindrical in the future.
