One Day, Four Sessions, And 40-Odd Tubes With Brett Barley & Friends
“The best day of the year… so far!”
This is the reason why surf blogs exist.
Reason being: if you were to make a surf-porn edit from this day on the Outer Banks, it would comprise two minutes of vaguely entertaining waveriding in decent head-high surf. Most people would watch it once, maybe not even all the way through, and then forget it about 20 seconds later.
However in the vlog format, where every step of Brett Barley’s day is chronologically relayed, we’re given a storyline and series of emotions that every surfer can connect with: excitement, anticipation, let-down, surprise, confusion, ecstasy, gratitude.
It was, as Brett famously said, “a whirlwind day,” with the waves lacking oomph at first light but slowly increasing in size and quality throughout the day, which never happens on an east coast low.
There was even a paddle-out for a fallen local surfer that crescendoed with dolphins jumping through the waves.
Over the course of one day, in which Brett surfed four sessions and wore his suit for over 10 hours, OBX locals collected upwards of 40 tubes (in the video) and went home with facial tan-lines from their neoprene hoods.
Is that not the reason all of us are surfers?
So far, surf vlog of the year in 2019.
