Shane Borland in “Primo”
Shane “Snack Boy” Borland is a product of the always radical cross-pollination between surfing and skating.
His new clip ‘Primo’ is a regular footers tour of Central America and Pipeline, featuring a terrific soundtrack and some Oaxacan quarterpipes. Upon questioning, he reveals that Hunter Martinez found the first song — leaving us almost certainly with a partial answer to “where does Dane find new music?”
“Hunter found the first song by Fontaines DC, and then I sent him the Ween song and it worked, so we stuck with it,” he tells me, while sharpie-ing surfboards in a Newport parking lot. “Some of the clips are from a trip to Mexico with Tosh Tudor and his dad. Tosh is the man, he’s so frothed. You forget how young he is, but then on surf trips you realize he’s such a froth-grom. He gets me psyched to surf, all he wants to do is get barreled.”
Who knew Joel Tudor would one day become “Tosh Tudors dad.” Proud papa moment.
As you might infer from the absurd audio at :29, Shane also fit a trip with A-list surf journo Jacob Szekely in the clip. As you’d guess, it was a very different vibe from chasing tubes with Tosh.
“Being there with Zeke was hectic,” he laughs. “I was debating if I wanted to use the audio from that clip but it was too funny not to. He’s the man and that trip was random, he was going down with Rusty so I went with him. We got some fun waves, it’s so hard to get the guy up in the morning though,” Shane laughs fondly.
