Mick Talks Motivation, Retirement And New Horizons
“I just found that the drive wasn’t there anymore” – Mick on competitive surfing.
It’s been two days since the Coolie Kid announced his retirement, but we’re still adapting to the idea of a tour without Mick Eugene Fanning.
After his retirement Instagram announcement, Mick did the Australian media rounds addressing the usual questions: the shark incident, competitive motivation and what’s next.
Below, Mick chats with Tom Tilley on the Australian social justice public radio, Triple J, about his motivation to compete, his half year in 2016 as well as what lies ahead for Mick’s post-competitive surfing career.
Whilst we’ll be missing Mick’s light-haired locks on the WSL tour, we won’t complain if he drip feeds us a steady stream of clips chasing Arctic Circle lumps, secretive sand-bottomed dreams or even throwing down a few unexpected aerials.
