“When It’s Smaller I’m Still Not Up To Gabby’s Air Twirling Standards.”
Nine questions pre J-Bay with world number one, Matt Wilkinson.
The honesty of Matt Wilkinson is admirable. He’s the breeziest interview subject on tour, at least a near-second to the vibrant Sebastian Zietz. A few months back, without hesitation, he revealed to Stab and the rest of the world that if coach Mirco wasn’t around he’d rather be swinging irons than dispersing water. In most sporting disciplines, that attitude might be frowned upon. Thankfully, not so much in surfing (though, spending increasing amounts of time in yellow has helped). So, on the eve of the J-Bay event, when the above interview clip landed in our inboxes we we’re delighted to hear what he had to say.
What the Skuff TV cats did was plant Mr Wilkinson in his natural habitat, on the green, and ask him nine questions over nine holes – clever huh? Subjects vary from headspace going into the South African event, frontside versus backside game, what his gal thinks of his obsession with dimpled balls, to how he went from tour party boy to title contention. If you’re after surf action, feel free to chip out, otherwise dive in and play caddy for the current world’s best competitive surfer.
