Kai Lenny’s Self Professed ‘Best Big Wave Season Yet’!
Four minutes of paddle in pits, strap in jumps, and even the unlikely wipeout.
Kai Lenny is kinda like Laird Hamilton. He’s a self-confessed big wave surf nerd and is at the forefront of ‘progressive’ big wave antics. Similar to Laird, you can guarantee he’s a fan, or has at least tried, just about any aquatic craft you can conjure up: shortboards, guns, hydrofoils, SUP’s, SUP hydrofoils, and I dare say he’s probably tried boogin at least once.
Kai isn’t confined to one surfing doctrine, he’s merely interested in surfing every which wave on every type of craft to the best of his ability. The main difference between he and Laird is simply that he comes off a little less smug. and you know, he hasn’t dropped a range of fertilised protein powder, or blabbered about the health benefits of a diet that pearly white whacko, Pete Evans, would endorse
The above clip is a compilation of the work he’s best known for: surfing big waves. Despite tow-surfing’s recent ego death, Kai gives it a fresh breath of life by playing with 40-foot walls the way most would at 3-foot Trestles. There’s also a bunch of late, paddle in drops, toe-dexterity testing tubes, and he even falls off a handful of times.
The backing track is a little coarse for my ears, but hey, when you’re surfing this good who gives a fuck!
