Jordy Smith Was Stuck In Hawaii For The Best Late-Season Run In Memory
“It was 6-8 foot for weeks straight. I surfed Pipe with one other guy out.”
Anyone born before the mid-90s remembers where they were when they learned the Twin Towers had fallen. The only event that has compared since 2001 is when we realized that covid wasn’t just another bird/cow/swine flu, and that it would affect every aspect of our lives for months (now years) to come.
For Jordy Smith, that place was the North Shore of Oahu. In March and April of 2020, Hawaii experienced its best late-season in recent memory, with northwest swell after northwest peppering the coast for weeks on end. As covid had closed the Hawaiian borders, the waves were available only to those presently on the island, which included locals and long-duration visitors like Jordy.
In episode one of his new video series, ‘Silver Linings’, Jordy reminisces about being in Hawaii for that brief, blissful window, before realizing that he’d have to catch one of just two repatriation flights if he wanted to get back to South Africa before the country completely shut its borders.
Serenity turns to stress real quick. Ep. 2 drops soon.
