Is This Australia’s Best 16-Year-Old?
Lennix Smith is running out of room on the trophy cabinet.
Lennix Smith lives in Barrack Point, a quaint coastal town in Shellharbour, 20 kilometres south of Wollongong.
The kid charges and has a very well-rounded repertoire such for such a young fella.
Lennix has been touted by many, including executives from major Australian surf brands, as the hottest young surfer coming out of Aus. Lennix recently competed in his first Pro Junior, the Oakberry Tweed Coast Pro, and took first place in a stacked bracket of Australia’s top young talent.
Not a bad way to begin a Pro Junior campaign.
He now adds his Tweed Pro win to his list of major accomplishments that include 2x Australian Titles, and The Occy Grom Comp Champion.
Lennix currently trains with Matt Griggs, a former professional tour surfer, coach of Mick Fanning, writer, lecturer, and meditation teacher.
Stab spoke to Lennix, who’s commencing year 11 via Zoom. Finding the motivation to soak up the curriculum via digitized bits has been challenging, he admits.
“The main goal is to be on tour. The plan, for now, is to keep chipping away at the Pro Junior and the QS. I’d to keep exploring Aus, particularly South Australia, and get some proper barrels.” says Lennix.
“I’m trying to stay out of the partying scene and stay focused. A lot of my mates are getting up to mischief pretty regularly. I’ve been getting right into the Kelee meditation Matt teaches, keep it on the straight and narrow. I didn’t really understand it at the start, but it’s been huge with all managing all the mental dynamics in competition and big waves.”
