How To Score in North Carolina
Hint: patience is key.
The last time I saw him, LA-based professional surfer, Andrew Jacobson, was no happy camper. Fresh off getting skunked during Winter Storm Riley, and Quinn, Andrew was frantically attempting to get far, far away from the east coast. He secretly resented his friend and tour guide, Brett Barley, for dragging him away from the better part of the swell to surf too big, and then too windy, and then too small of waves in North Carolina. You could taste the tension between them.
But then, just before Andrew could book his flight home, another storm came into view–Winter Storm Skylar. Not quite as big as Riley, Skylar looked preferable for one particular setup in North Carolina, so Andrew stayed an extra five days with Brett, wondering if the new swell would prove worthy of his extensive struggle.
Then Skylar arrived and, goddamnit, the period was too long. Andrew was shocked. Gutted. Seething. He was thinking of all the best ways to kill his friend Brett until, just before dark, the waves turned on and Andrew got tubed.
Just like that, he was cured of his internal rage. Barrels can be so therapeutic. Praise be.
