How To Backside Barrel-Ride With Joan Duru
The Frenchman puts on a clinic between Morocco and France.
Backside barrel-riding is one of surfing’s finest arts.
For most of us its a grab-your-rail-and-pray kind of affair, but for the top .01% of surfing’s elite, the grotesquely-named “pig-dogging” is the most subtly skillful task one can perform on water craft.
The way that the arms, legs, hands, feet, and head work together to kill and generate speed is as difficult to perceive as it is vital to the surfer’s survival.
If you wish to improve your own backside tube skills, we recommend watching everything beyond the 3:12 mark of this video ten times over. Study it, embrace it, practice the positions in your living room and apply them on the next swell. Backside tube-riding takes eons to perfect but what better time to start than now?
