Kalama Stratton is making a mockery of the 10,000 hour rule.
As part of a healthy morning routine, the first thing I did was reach for my phone on the bedside table, free it from airplane mode, and open a message with a link to the YouTube video above.
Kalama Stratton, 14, has shown admirable restraint in titling it 8 Minutes of Pure Barrels. Equal restraint is shown in letting very serious waves do most of the work for (and around) him.
The son of a Mexican mother and a Hawaiian father, Kalama gets barreled with a maturity well beyond his years. Remove age from the equation and his surfing is no less impressive.
A rude wake up call for me, before getting stuck in traffic on the way to 30 minutes of soft, gutless, high tide beachbreak.
