Watch: Eli Beukes’s Quiet Mic Drop
Silent man, loud surfing.
When competing alongside outspoken Stab Highway Europe teammates like Jacob Szekely and Letty Mortensen, finding your own voice can be difficult.
Fortunately for Eli Beukes, his surfing speaks volumes.
“He’s so gnarly,” Zeke remarked during Eli’s clinical dissection of the air challenge in France last summer. “He’s all humble, like ‘I don’t know if I can do that, bru.’ He’s literally so good at airs and doesn’t have confidence.”
The understated and soft-spoken South African just released a self-edited sizzler, further showcasing his variety in all manner of reefs and points, backside and front. Chommies documents Eli and friends Brendon Gibbens and Luke Slijpen going through a rolodex of airs around Cape Town, burning their legs at Skeleton Bay and indulging in a Kirra doppelganger in Mozambique.
It’s yet another testament to South African surfers, a reminder that if one can brave the elements, the big fish and a debilitating currency exchange rate, good things can happen. Consider this Eli’s humble brag.
