Coming Soon: Andy Irons and The Radicals
A look at one of surfing’s superheroes through the eyes of those who knew him best.
On Thursday, we’ll premiere our new four-part series, Andy Irons and The Radicals.
Ten years after his death, and with the tragic and crucial Kissed By God in the rearview mirror, we felt it was time to remember just what it was that made Andy Irons so truly gifted, special, polarizing, attractive, influential, and iconic.
So we started asking and people started talking.
Andy’s longtime filmers, confidantes, and comrades came forward with boxes of hi-8, VHS, and early digital tapes. We’ll come straight out of the gates saying this film would have been absolutely impossible without the infinitely generous contributions of Herbie and Dibi Fletcher, Tupat and Hopper Eichsteadt, Mike Reola, Matt Biolos, Runman, Jason Hatch, Drew Todd, the Alani Brothers, Jason Kenworthy, Brian Bielmann, Bill Ballard, Rory Pringle, and countless others.
By opening up their archives, they knew they’d be preserving the legacy Andy would have wanted out there: the two decades of relentlessly progressive surfing he left behind.
This movie is not a tell-all biopic, or a confessional. There aren’t any skeletons being any pulled out of any closets. This four-part episode is a deep, long look at Andy’s surfing life, through the eyes of those who knew him best at each of his many career stages.
From countless hours of unseen footage over Andy’s three decades, and cut from even more hours of interviews with Bruce Irons, Matt Biolos, Jason Stevenson, Cory and Shea Lopez, Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Mason Ho, Dustin Barca, and others, this is an attempt to preserve once and for all the full range of Andy’s surfing.
This movie is for generations in the future, so they can get a full taste of the closest thing surfing will ever have to a true rock star.
Stay tuned for Episode 1 coming to you Thursday, February 25th at 6 PM PST.
