Chippa Wilson, Nate Tyler, And Colin Moran Star In ‘Clever Napkin’
Including a cameo from Wade Goodall, all shot in crummy California!
Writing titles for clips like this is easy. There’s no need to throw in a compelling line, stretch the truth, or resort to overused alliteration. You can just be blunt. Or, more eloquently put, prosaic.
As the title suggests, this clip features Chippa Wilson, Nate Tyler, and Colin Moran tearing around the Californian coast. It was shot, cut, directed, and all the rest by Michael Cukr, a fantastic filmer, and a gent who Stab is quite fond of.
“Chippa was in CA and has been into collecting and restoring old American cars lately. He had just got that maroon van you can see in some of this clips. He hit me up and was wanting to do a road trip to film.” Michael told Stab about the clip. “Colin Moran is a really good friend of mine so I invited him and he hopped in the van. Nate Tyler lives up there so we surfed with him and he was nice enough to show us around. We were only up there for 2 days.”
The clip, as you can tell, was shot in some pretty shitty waves. Our Editor-in-hat, Ashton Goggans might claim that California is a requisite locale for any serious surfer, but that’s just because he grew up in shitty old Florida. While ‘Fornia often pumps, this clip features some of its sloppier side.
“I kind of just go wherever those guys wanted to surf.” Cukr continued. “There’s clips at C street and Little Rincon in the edit that I like a lot. I just think it’s rare to see footage of pros surfing really average California waves so I thought those were kinda cool.
“Wade [Goodall] just happened to be in town on a Vans trip when we surfed that little left at C street and I love his surfing so I put that wave in. Nowhere else was breaking so I think everyone who was in the area who wanted to surf went there. Dane came and checked it but opted to get a beer on the pier instead.”
Some of those shitty waves were also unappealing beyond their surface quality. “That one huge air reverse Chippa does during the section with the Dahmer song – that was the only wave he got that session.
“It’s a kinda far walk down to the beach along this rivermouth so its got a real spooky feel. There was nobody else around. Chippa paddled out and did that air and then got out.”
Anyway, go watch the clip. It is cool!
