Ch.11 TV Disciple Josiah Amico Stars In ‘Not An Athlete’
His words, not ours.
As surfing prepares to make its Olympic debut in ∼ less than 100 days ∼ the chasm between those who consider themselves ‘surfers’ and ‘athletes’ will only continue to widen.
The variance in approach between a Gabriel Medina and a Mikey February is stark. The fact that at one point these two shared the world stage is part of what makes surfing so unique: it doesn’t discriminate against anyone. Well, almost anyone…
Josiah Amico is firmly rooted in the ‘surfer’ camp. This means no beachside calisthenics, no pre-heat Beats by Dre fueled warm ups, and definetly no interferences. In fact, Josiah has gone so far as to create a line of merch displaying his allegiance to his surfing identity. When I asked Josiah how he came up with the ‘Not An Athlete’ tagline he had this to say.
“I feel like I don’t really fit the mold of most surfers and the direction surfing’s been going these past few years with everyone wanting to be an athlete instead of surfing being core like it used to be. I hate training, never go to the gym, and just want to surf. It’s so unique and unlike any other sport. “
We know that somewhere a lone tear is rolling down the face of a proud Dane Reynolds, who (no surprise) is Josiah’s favorite surfer. With a full time job at Trader Joes, Josiah found time between shifts to stack the above clips with Jason ‘Mini’ Blanchard. Not one to pass up an inside scoop, I had to ask him: What are best snacks TJ’s has on offer?
“They have a vegan chocolate chip hazelnut cookie that is ridiculous whether you’re vegan or not. The Jalapeño puffers are insane, no dip needed! Also the chili lime chips that are like Takis but way better”.
