Can’t Drink, Can’t Drive, Can Combo You In Terrifying Waves
Brody Mulik, Cruz Uros and Ale Dotti give us hope for the next generation.
“There are no results to display.”
That’s what the computer screen says after typing Brody Mulik’s name into the search bar at worldsurfleague.com.
I have another go. “Cruz Uros.” Still no results. Then, “Alessandro Dotti.” Nothing.
In the last month, Brody (15), Cruz (14), and Alessandro (9) have each released a solo edit, all under five minutes. And hardly a jersey in sight.
Sure, they’ve all won Junior comps, but their dedication to creating proper freesurf edits gives us reason to believes the kids are more than alright.
I’d been hearing surfing parents with kids around their ages lament that their offspring had little interest in the sport, and that some of them even thought surfing was “dorky.”
Leif Mulik had in Brody a son keen to paddle into Tombstones and North Point as early as eleven. Leif, who started surfing in Western Australia, where the Muliks are from, at thirteen, has swiftly escaped the dorky dad label. His son is doing his part in un-dorking surfing, too.
You might remember Brody’s SEOTY entry earlier this year. It was impossible to ignore how comfortable and unfazed he looked in heavy waves, where there’s little room for anything other than barrels and, occasionally, airs. It’s hard not to think of Sabotaj and miscellaneous footage of a younger Jack Robinson at home. Brody is carrying that torch, though he hasn’t yet shown the same appetite for surfing in front of a panel as Taj and Robbo.
Cruz, like Brody, seems more interested in doing it for the fun and love of it. Equally at ease inside North Point kegs or in the air at Rabbit’s, the WA native also happens to be extremely talented with a skateboard under his feet. His time in the bowl shows in his technique above the lip, and has made him a regular at Stab High. His edit, Almost…, was mostly filmed at home and also assembled by Rex Nink, who worked with Brody on his.
The youngest weapon in Quik’s extraordinary can’t-drink, can’t-drive roster is Italian Ale Dotti, whose edit titled This Is Too Much Fun, only reinforces the idea that the freesurfing spirit is alive.
The little blip first appeared on our radar recently, and what impressed us most was the maturity and decisiveness of the lines he chooses across a variety of conditions. Residing in Indonesia, he’s been spending plenty of time in the Ments, polishing his surfing further and increasing his level of comfort in less than comfortable surf.
Have you seen better tube riding from a nine-year-old?
