Bobby Martinez And Parker Coffin Make Mincemeat Of Australia’s Most Enviable Wedges
Is there a better backhand mentor than Mr. “Tennis Tour” himself?
In his last five years on the Qualifying series, Parker Coffin has finished within the top 100 surfers exactly once.
That’s not a knock on Parker’s very fine surfing, but instead a cruel reminder of how many great surfers exist in this world, and how subsequently difficult it is to succeed – assuming your definition of “success” consists of notable competitive results.
But perhaps Parker Coffin is beginning to gain a new perspective on professional surfing (and life in general) thanks to the time he spent with his life-long idol Bobby Martinez on Australia’s east coast.
Over the course of a couple weeks, Bobby and Parker traveled by plane, car, and water taxi to discover the wedging havens of New South Wales. They hacked the shit out of sections and slipped the odd tube, but even beyond the surfing Parker seemed to gain existential insight from the CT veteran, such that he will use to inform his future life decisions.
To watch this video is to see a squirming caterpillar transform into a beautiful flowing butterfly.
Also, my new favorite surf move is the one Parker does at 7:01.
