Welcome back to Beach Chair, a Stab x Corona joint in which we capture the most interesting stories around World Tour events. Here we spend a rainy Gold Coast afternoon with Mikey Wright, who was the subject of much talk following his round one wildcard win over Adriano de Souza at Snapper, not least of all because of his haircut (which we find out more about here). We also discuss the surfing style that gets him high. The kid is a unique existence in his surfing generation. Mick Fanning spawned an era of gym enthusiasts and trainer/coach combos, but Mikey embraces the glow (and grime) in the rearview mirror, bringing a rare vibe to professional surfing that it has sorely missed since the departure of gents like Matt Hoy. Mikey plays it fast and loose, and we’re all the better for it. Dance in his flames above.
