After An Injury Plagued 2018, A Lost Sponsor And One Hell Of A Short Film, Brendon Gibbens Isn’t Going Anywhere
Banks Journal welcomes Beeg to the team.
We’ve long been fans of Brendon Gibbens. In 2018, the South African –> Los Angeles transplant had a rough year. During our Stab High event, he reinjured his knee during warm-ups. The very same day, he got news that his sponsor Vissla was restructuring the team without him. Then, a month later he released his clip, “Homebody,” which reminded everyone of the Beeg they know and love – limber joints, big, tweaked airs, drawn out turns, excellent barrel riding and all done with first class style.
A few days back, Banks Journal released this welcome to the team edit, featuring highlights from Brendon’s past year. It’s worth a watch. But, if you missed “Homebody,” hit the play button below and sink into the ten minute short that earned Beeg and filmmaker Blake Myers a Vimeo Staff pick.
“We actually met through Blake Peters at Panda Surfboards, who’ve been making boards for me for some years now out of Costa Mesa,” Mr. Gibbens told Surfing Magazine‘s (RIP) and occasional Stab Contributor, Beau Flemister, on how this Banks/Beeg relationship came to be. “Banks just seems like a great, tightknit family and I really look forward to being involved with them. I’m really happy with it. Since ditching the whole competitive thing some years ago and going the freesurfing route, it’s been cool realizing the role a surfer can play in the whole advertising side, working with the photographer and videographers and being a part of the editing process — I just love being a part of it all and feel really lucky to have a career this long without having to do the QS or something.”
