A Fresh Chronicle On The Avant-Garde
Longboards, single fins, twins and a board we’re not even sure what to call.
Considering how diverse the variety of waves the ocean offers, it’s baffling how singular board design can drift. Yes; the thruster is fantastic. There’s a reason why it’s the apex craft. It’s fast, works in the pocket, paddles well, can defy gravity and looks good with stickers. Game, set and off the rack it goes. Or such was the case until recent, as alternative craft made a major resurgence. Award winning Australian filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, creator of Lines From A Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea, has been one of the several filmmakers documenting the chic (see that board at 1:09?) revival. And his new flick, The Church Of The Open Sky, is another chapter to his kink-knee compendium. Shot on location in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka and starring Dave Rastovich, Alex Knost, Neal Purchase Jr. and many others it promises to be an, “Inspired and endearing representation of the surfing experience.”
