Last night, Volcom premiered their new film, True To This, at the Twin Towns in Coolangatta. It was the best kinda core experience in every way. The venue wasn’t pretentious (if you’ve been to Twin Towns, you’ll know this), and the premiere was all about the film – a good old fashioned lock in, blacked out cinema style. And… the film itself. Exactly what we hoped it would be. Surfing, skating and snowboarding blended seamlessly together in classic Volcom style. An iron fist of groundbreaking performances, with a velvet glove of nostalgia. Ryan Burch’s coupla G-Land hooks are on dime. Ozzie Wright is rad and raw as ever. Dusty Payne looks better than we’ve ever seen him. Alex Gray’s Mexico session is hypnotic. Mitch Coleborn, Yago Dora and Nate Tyler in the Maldives is brill on every level (Yago’s flattened stalefish straight-airs are particularly nuts, and Mitch reaches very high). And the Pipe section is future classic: For those who remember, watching Gav Beschen hold on beneath a feathering Pipe lip, cut to psyched-out Stone rock, is a rush of everything you used to love about Volcom films. Never change, please.
