Vans US Open of Surfing (part six)

And then there were eight. The Vans US Open of Surfing quarter-finalists were decided today, and only one Southern-Californian remains (Connor Coffin, however, was crowned the US Open Junior Champ for the second year running). Kolohe Andino dusted defending champ Julian Wilson by a mere 0.9 points. “I’m stoked because I was pretty nervous halfway through the heat,” said Kolohe. “I wanted to do well so bad because Julian is such a hard competitor. I knew I had a decent chance of losing because he’s so good. There were no waves in that heat and I was so nervous. I had a good left and only got a 4 because I surfed it so bad. I’m really stoked to make it to the next round and I’m just trying to take it as it comes.” The $100k prize purse ain’t pocket change. For one of the remaining eight competitors, a mere three heats separate them from glory and a tantalising payday. Talk about motivation! – Rupert Partridge.
