Thousands Show Up Across Australia To Fight For The Bight
Making a stand against oil drilling off Australia’s southern coast.
We all saw the horrid graphic, the one that showed just how bad shit would get if there was a mishap with Equinor’s proposed deepwater oil-drilling in the Great Australian Bight, the catastrophic dead zone resulting from a spill extending from Western Australia to areas north of Sydney.
Predictably, the world mobilised to respond. Social media was saturated, petitions were signed and yesterday, protests took place from South Australia, Perth, Torquay, Manly all the way to Alexandria Headland way up on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Thousands joined the paddle out, many more stood together on land, banners in hand.
Being the ocean-worshipping populace that we are, a situation like this is unfathomable, and the possibility of it manifesting (regardless of its probability), is straight unacceptable.
This isn’t just about our surfing beaches, it’s the countless lifeforms and precious ecosystems that would tragically collapse. And in a time where safe and sustainable energy sources are available, why the actual fuck is this even a thing?
So far 15 councils and more than half a million people have voiced serious concerns and opposition to Bight oil drilling.
A message has been sent, but while the proposal still exists in some form, the fight will continue.
